When was the last time you told someone exactly what you wanted? Big or small?

Maybe you really want Indian for dinner, but you know your partner’s not keen, so you hint at it instead of chancing a full rejection. You end up going along with fish and chips instead.

Maybe you really want the higher-end milling machine because good tools make tasks more joyful, and more joyful employees make a better atmosphere for everyone. But you can’t quantify that to your CFO, so you try to justify it some other way instead of firmly saying what you’re thinking. You get the mediocre machine instead, and listen to the weekly complaints from that machine operator.

Maybe you want the investor you’re friendly with to invest in your company, but you never say so directly, instead making small talk whenever you see them. They don’t realise you’re open to investment. The offer never comes.

Society trains us that it’s “nicer” to be indirect rather than direct, especially for women. If you don’t say it directly, others can form all the wrong ideas about what you want, and you’ll likely never get what you want. Try this instead:

Think of something you really want.

Imagine a conversation where you’re being direct in trying to get it.

Keep doing that until it feels natural.

Then do it consistently in real life and see the changes.

Why and How to Use These Prompts

Getting into a better place in thinking about money is a vital first step to facing our numbers and then doing something to better them - all the stuff I'm here to help you with.

Use these prompts to gently explore your feelings about money at your own pace. Remember, the point is to dig beneath the surface for yourself.

Brew up a cuppa, put on some chill music, light a candle or incense, get a notebook and pen, and give it a go. Consider setting a timer for just 15 minutes and write whatever comes into your head.

For some prompts, you might prefer to meditate on them instead. Or ponder them whilst doing the washing up or walking the dog. Or you might want to talk them through with a trusted friend. Do whatever works for you to help you get to a better money mindset.
